The first decisions after a fire
Safety, authorization and a record come before a restoration product.
Separate the immediate situation from the recovery project
For active fire or immediate danger, leave safely and call9-1-1. After the immediate response, entry permission and property-specific hazards still need to be established. A general guide cannot approve a building for access. For wildfire return, follow current local authority instructions and relevant AHS guidance.
Do not enter to take photos, retrieve contents or test equipment simply because a form asks for information. An initial enquiry can identify the broad event, municipality and assistance needed while access remains unresolved.
Organize the responsible people
| Question | Responsibility to establish |
|---|---|
| Entry and immediate hazards | Relevant emergency/local authority and property professionals. |
| Building condition | Qualified assessment for the actual concern. |
| Utilities/equipment | Relevant trades, utility and manufacturer advice. |
| Restoration scope | A provider’s defined assessment/work responsibilities. |
| Insurance | Actual insurer/policy and authorized claim contact. |
Keep a short event record
- Record confirmed dates and the known source; label uncertainties.
- List who gave entry or utility instructions and what they said.
- Keep existing photographs and documents with location labels.
- Record necessary expenses and retain receipts.
- Ask before authorizing irreversible contents or building work.
Define the first visit
Ask whether the visit is for emergency controls, assessment, estimating or another purpose. Clarify the deliverable, cost authorization and exclusions. An estimate or initial look does not automatically resolve equipment, exposure or hidden-assembly questions.
