SMOKE + RESTORATION GUIDANCE

Build a useful claim record

Keep observations, authorizations and costs connected without deciding coverage yourself.

Keep facts and decisions separate

An event record describes what happened and what was observed. A contractor scope proposes work. An insurer decision addresses the actual policy and claim. Keep those records distinct even when they concern the same room or item.

Government of Alberta guidance explains that policy wording and limits vary. This site cannot establish that a particular loss, treatment, expense or replacement will be paid. Ask the insurer for the actual position in writing and the policy basis.

Use a simple record index

Folder/recordUseful contents
EventDates, known source, authority instructions and safe photographs.
PropertyRoom labels, assessment reports and access limits.
ContentsItem IDs, descriptions, existing ownership/purchase records.
WorkScope, estimates, authorization and revisions.
ExpensesReceipts, purpose, date and related communication.
CompletionChecks, disposition and unresolved exceptions.

Preserve evidence without delaying safety

Ask how necessary hazard controls, removal and repair can be coordinated with documentation. Do not retain hazardous debris in occupied space to support an insurance argument. Where disposal is needed, ask how the condition and authorization will be recorded.

Keep original files and a backed-up copy. Use descriptive filenames rather than relying only on an unsorted photo roll. Avoid adding medical records, policy numbers or private tenant data to a generic service enquiry.

Ask precise claim questions

  • Which actual coverage or limit is being applied?
  • What information remains outstanding?
  • Who can authorize the proposed work and cost?
  • What deadline applies under this policy or claim?
  • How can a disagreement be reviewed through the insurer’s process?
