SMOKE + RESTORATION GUIDANCE

Upholstery and mattresses

Cover fabrics, internal filling and intended contact create different assessment questions.

Describe the whole item

A sofa, chair or mattress can include covers, filling, frames, seams and inaccessible interiors. Ask which components were assessed and which can actually be reached by the proposed process. A clean-looking cover should not close the question about an unassessed interior.

Record the item ID, room, known event conditions and maker/care information from existing records. Keep owner priorities, including a sentimental or special-use item, separate from any assurance of successful retention.

Ask for a defensible disposition

The provider should explain the basis for recommending retention, testing, treatment or replacement. That basis may involve condition, access, function, material compatibility and intended use. Do not substitute an online rule that every soft item is either salvageable or a total loss.

For a mattress or another close-contact item, make the intended use explicit and ask who is qualified to address suitability. A general surface-cleaning result cannot answer every exposure or product-use question.

Follow the item through the project

  • What was inspected and what remained inaccessible?
  • What tests and acceptance criteria were agreed?
  • Was pack-out authorized and custody recorded?
  • What treatment or replacement reason is retained?
  • Who reviews a concern before return to use?

Document before disposal when safe

Ask how photographs, descriptions and authorization will be preserved without delaying necessary safety controls. Do not store hazardous contents in an occupied room while waiting for a claim decision. Coordinate safety, provider scope and insurer records as separate responsibilities.
