Tile, grout and stone surfaces
The surface, joints, finish and substrate may respond differently.
Describe the material accurately
Glazed ceramic, unglazed products, natural stone, grout and sealants are not interchangeable. Identify the product and finish from records if available. Where it is unknown, ask what identification or compatibility work is needed before proposing treatment.
Keep deposited material separate from etching, staining, heat change, moisture or failed joints. A black mark can be documented without assigning it a chemical composition.
Evaluate the finish and the joints
Ask how a provider will test the actual finish and determine whether joints, textured areas or interfaces need a separate approach. A satisfactory result on a smooth tile face may not represent grout or an unsealed stone surface.
Discuss which areas can be accessed and whether evidence supports further investigation below or behind the finish. A proposed coating should name its purpose and limitations instead of being treated as a universal smoke remedy.
Make repair expectations concrete
| Detail | Question |
|---|---|
| Stone finish | Will sheen, colour or texture change? |
| Grout | What condition and treatment basis have been established? |
| Sealant | Is compatibility or renewal included? |
| Underlying assembly | Is further assessment required and authorized? |
| Matching | Which edges or full areas will be repaired? |
Keep treatments out of guesswork
Do not mix household chemicals or select an acidic/abrasive product from a generic residue description. Use the material identification, qualified assessment and actual product information to govern work. Retain test and disposition records with the room scope.
