Food, medicine and children’s items
Product safety and intended use need more than an appearance check.
Use the right authority for the product
Food, drinking water, medicines and children’s products should not be treated as ordinary decorative contents. For food/water after wildfire, use current local notices and Alberta Health Services guidance. For medicines, ask the pharmacist or relevant product professional about the actual event and storage conditions.
A sealed package or absence of visible soot is not a website clearance decision. Record the item category and known event conditions without taste-testing food or experimenting with a product.
Separate the item categories
| Category | Question to take to the appropriate authority |
|---|---|
| Food and water | Which event, storage and local-advisory conditions apply? |
| Medicines | What does the pharmacist advise about this product and storage/event? |
| Toys and feeding items | What material, intended contact and manufacturer guidance apply? |
| Special equipment | Who establishes suitability for its actual use? |
Keep the claim record practical
Where it can be done safely, document categories, quantities and existing purchase records before disposal. Do not collect or keep hazardous items in occupied spaces just to complete an insurance inventory. Ask how safe disposal and claim documentation can be coordinated.
The inventory tool can hold owner-entered quantities and estimates. It cannot determine whether an item is safe, covered or payable. Keep those decisions with the appropriate authority and actual claim.
Do not transfer health details through the enquiry
An initial HAUSE enquiry only needs the broad service question and location. Omit medical records, diagnoses, prescriptions and child identifiers. Discuss product-specific and personal health concerns with the appropriate professional through their suitable channel.
