SMOKE + RESTORATION GUIDANCE

Carpet and underlay

A visible carpet surface is only part of the flooring system.

List the components

Carpet pile, backing, underlay, edge details and subfloor are different assessment components. Ask which are included and why. A treatment of the visible pile should not be presented as assessment of all concealed layers.

Record the rooms, product information if known, event conditions and any suppression-water impact. Keep odour observations located and dated. Appearance and smell alone do not establish suitability for retention.

Ask about the proposed result

A cleaning proposal should identify the intended result, compatibility and test basis. Ask how the provider evaluates the actual carpet system rather than relying on a broad claim that every carpet can be cleaned or must be replaced.

If removal is proposed, agree item/area records and authorization before disposal where feasible and safe. Clarify who addresses the subfloor, edge details and reinstatement rather than assuming they are included.

Connect access with the work boundary

  • Will furniture or contents need separate handling?
  • Which underlying components remain unassessed?
  • What moisture-related work is included?
  • How are treatment limitations and completion checks recorded?
  • What is the basis for each retained or removed area?

Avoid a household trial becoming the decision

A rented cleaner or fragrance may change the condition before documentation and qualified assessment. Ask about evidence preservation and a suitable test plan first. Tool observations can help organize questions; they do not select a process or clear a material for use.
