Sticky or smeared smoke residue

Describe what is visible

“Sticky-looking film near the cabinet” is a usable initial observation. “Wet smoke” may be a term used in a restoration conversation, but do not treat the label as a laboratory finding or as proof that one cleaning agent is suitable. Known fuel/event information and the actual substrate belong beside the description.

If a previous wipe changed the appearance, record what was done and where, if known. Do not repeat a trial across the room to see whether the result improves. A changed surface can complicate the record and the next provider’s assessment.

Ask about the finish as well as the film

A cabinet coating, painted wall and fabric covering do not create the same test question. Ask how the provider will evaluate finish compatibility, accessible areas and the basis for retaining the item. A successful spot result should include its limitations rather than being assumed to represent every surface.

If a chemical product is proposed, ask for its identity, safety information, purpose and work-area controls. This guide does not supply a degreaser recipe, dilution or mixing instruction. The appropriate selection belongs to the actual material and qualified work plan.

Questions for a proposed process

• What is the assessment basis for the film and affected boundary?
• What cleaning/handling is proposed for each material?
• How will redistribution or transfer to adjoining areas be prevented?
• What would cause the process to change or the item to be replaced?
• How are source treatment and odour follow-up included?

Use the visual demonstration carefully

The wipe illustration shows how a drawn coating can lighten or smear. It is not a simulation of the chemistry, exposure or finish in your building. Its useful lesson is to ask what a first intervention changes and how a test result will be documented.

Agree the completion record before broad treatment begins. Record areas that remain inaccessible or outside the scope so a cosmetic result does not close a question that was never assessed.
