Asbestos and disturbance questions

Identify before changing the material

Health Canada describes risks associated with disturbing asbestos-containing materials and the need for appropriate professional advice. Visual appearance and an approximate building age do not establish whether a specific material contains asbestos.

Restoration or repair may disturb finishes, board, insulation or other existing products. Ask who identifies relevant materials before scraping, sanding, opening or removing them. Do not collect a household sample based on an online illustration.

Keep workplace requirements in their context

Alberta OHS Code Part4 addresses hazardous substances, including asbestos, for the responsible workplace parties. A public information page cannot replace a competent project-specific plan, required identification or lawful handling.

Ask who is responsible for the assessment, controls, authorized access, waste and completion record. Keep that scope distinct from ordinary surface-restoration work.

Use these questions before approving disturbance

• Which material will be disturbed and why?
• What identification is required and who performs it?
• Which applicable rules and qualified responsibilities govern the work?
• How is access to the work area managed?
• What records will be provided at completion?

Retain uncertainty honestly

If material identification remains outstanding, record that as an unresolved prerequisite. Do not translate “older building” into a diagnosis or “no visible fibres” into reassurance. The actual material and assessment result govern the decision.
